Bank Statement Translation for Visas

Bank statement translation is different from most of the documents on this site in one important way: it's rarely the only document in the file, and it's almost never short. A birth certificate is one page. A bank statement supporting a student visa or a sponsorship petition is routinely six, twelve, or twenty pages of transaction lines, and every one of those pages usually has to be translated, not summarized. That volume is the main thing to plan for.

Why the full statement, not a summary letter

It's tempting to ask a bank for a one-page balance confirmation letter instead of the full statement, since it's shorter and cheaper to translate. Sometimes that's accepted; often it isn't, because the receiving officer is checking transaction history, not just a closing balance. UK guidance on certifying a translated document treats a bank or building society statement as a standard example of a financial document that gets certified as a full copy, not a summary (gov.uk, Certifying a document), and the certification wording an officer expects, that it's "a true and accurate translation of the original document," only makes sense applied to the whole record. If your program's instructions explicitly accept a bank letter instead of a full statement, use that; if they're silent, assume the full statement is what's expected and confirm with the receiving office before you cut corners.

Student visa financial requirements

For a UK Student visa, the government sets a specific number and a specific holding period: you need £1,529 per month (up to 9 months) for courses in London, or £1,171 per month outside London, and "you must have this money for at least 28 days in a row," with the 28-day window ending within 31 days of your application date (gov.uk, Student visa: Money you need). That 28-day rule is the detail that trips people up: a statement showing the right balance on the day you apply isn't enough if the balance wasn't there continuously for the preceding 28 days. Applicants from a list of listed countries, including the US, Canada, most of the EU, and several others, are exempt from proving this altogether unless specifically asked, per the same guidance — worth checking before you pay for a translation you may not need.

For US-bound F-1 students, the pattern is similar in spirit though the rules sit with each school's international office rather than a single federal page: schools generally want a statement (or sponsor's statement) covering at least a full year of tuition and living costs, dated recently, before they'll issue the I-20 that makes the visa application possible. If your statement is in a language other than English, USCIS's general rule for any foreign-language document submitted with an immigration filing applies here too: a complete English translation with the translator's signed certification of accuracy and competence, attached to the original document (USCIS Checklist of Required Initial Evidence for Form I-485).

Affidavits of support and sponsorship evidence

When a bank statement is submitted to support an I-864 affidavit of support or a similar sponsorship declaration rather than the applicant's own funds, the same complete-and-certified standard applies, and the stakes are arguably higher: a sponsor's statement gets compared line by line against the income and asset figures declared on the affidavit itself. Inconsistent numbers between the translated statement and the sponsor's declared figures are a more common source of delay than any issue with translation quality. If a sponsor is providing several months of statements to demonstrate a stable average balance rather than a single snapshot, translate them as one project so terminology (account holder name spelling, transaction category labels) stays consistent across the set; a translator who's not familiar with financial documents can render the same recurring transaction description two different ways in two different months' statements, which reads as inconsistent even when the underlying figures are fine.

How page count actually affects cost

Because financial documents run long, this is one document type where the total genuinely scales with length rather than staying near a flat minimum. It's still usually cheaper than people expect, because transaction lines (dates, amounts, reference codes) translate quickly and repetitively once the account holder details and header fields are set, but it's worth uploading the actual page count when you request a quote rather than guessing, so the estimate you get matches what you'll be charged.

Currency and number formatting between locales

One detail that's easy to get wrong on a financial document specifically: number formatting conventions vary by locale in ways that change the meaning of a figure, not just its appearance. Continental European statements commonly use a comma as the decimal separator and a period or space as the thousands separator (1.234,56), the reverse of US and UK convention (1,234.56). A translator working on a financial document needs to either preserve the source formatting with a note, or convert it explicitly and flag the conversion, never quietly reformat a number in a way that could be misread as a different amount. Currency symbols and codes should also be kept exact; converting a stated balance into a different currency is outside the scope of a translation and something only the receiving institution should do, using its own exchange rate on its own date.
